My Pool Heater’s Playing Hard to Get—What’s the Deal?

Here are the top 5 reasons your gas pool heater won’t stay on and how to troubleshoot:

1. Dirty or Clogged Filter

  • A dirty pool filter restricts water flow, triggering the heater’s safety mechanisms to shut it off.
  • Fix: Clean or replace your filter to restore proper water flow.

2. Low Water Flow

  • Heaters require a consistent water flow to operate. Low flow could be due to a clogged pump basket, closed valves, or an undersized pump.
  • Fix: Check for obstructions, ensure valves are open, and verify your pump is functioning properly.

3. Pilot Light Issues

  • If your heater has a standing pilot light, it might be out. This could be due to a dirty pilot assembly or a faulty thermocouple.
  • Fix: Relight the pilot light and clean the assembly. Replace the thermocouple if needed.

4. Gas Supply Problems

  • Insufficient gas supply or a closed gas valve will prevent your heater from staying on.
  • Fix: Check that your gas valve is fully open and ensure the gas supply line is free from blockages.

5. Faulty Temperature Sensors or Pressure Switches

  • Malfunctioning sensors or switches can signal the heater to shut off, even if conditions are fine.
  • Fix: Inspect the sensors and switches. Replace faulty components as needed (or call a professional).

If these don’t resolve the issue, it may require a technician to inspect internal parts like the heat exchanger or gas manifold. Regular maintenance is the key to keeping your heater running smoothly!
